West Virginia Bat Removal

West Virginia bats are members of the batfamily called Vespertilionidae, also knownas evening or common bats. They eat insects, taking prey on the wing. West Virginia is home to 13 bat species, the most common nuisance bat species are the Little Brown Bat (Myotis lucifugus), which before the spread of the white nosed bat syndrome was the most common bat in the United States; Big Brown Bat (Eptesicus fuscus) is known to also enter homes ; and the Eastern pipistrelle  or Pygmy bat (Pipistrellus subflavus).  The silver haired bat and the red bat are less common and rarely found in homes. The following bats can also be found in West Virginia but are considered rare- hoary bat, Indiana bat, evening bat, Virginia big eared bat, small footed myotis, northern bat  or northern myotis, gray bat and Rafinesque’s Bat.

Virginia is home to 17 bat species, Three of the bat species in Virginia are federal endangered species (Gray Bat, Indiana Bat, and Virginia Big-eared Bat); the Rafinesque’s Big-eared Bat, also known as the Eastern Big-eared Bat, is a state threatened and endangered species.
